Kundan, the ancient name given to the purest variety of gold which is fully purified in fire, and the foils of it were set as the base to hold the gem firmly in its place. Later the work itself was given the name of Kundan work.

Kundan work is a method of gem setting, consisting of inserting gold foil between the stone and its mount, kundan is also combined with enamelling or minakari, so that a piece of jewellery has two equally beautiful surfaces, enamel in the back and kundan set gems in the front. The glitz of kundan jewellery lies in the past connection with the Royal kings and queens and that gives these timeless jewellery an extra glitter of Royal touch.

Kundan, one of the oldest form of jewellery making, is an art that derive inspiration from Mughals who mastered the art of setting different precious stones in silver and gold metals. In recent times the form of art has developed and jewellers create splendid and eye catching kundan jewellery of different modern traditional styles.

Before the introduction of claw setting in the 19th century, virtually all Indian Jewellery was Kundan set, a quintessentially Indian technique, wherein layers of narrow ribbons of Kundan form a solid wedge around the gemstone. Traditional Mughal style jewellery is still made in this manner, unchanged for centuries.
